History

In 2001 Sign Players Unlimited, under the direction of Mary Higgins, collaborated with the Holley Ear Institute to produce the first Deaf Arts Festival. Featured at the first festival were local, national and internationally known Deaf artists. Over 1,000 people walked onto the grounds that day!

In 2003 the festival almost doubled in size. Deaf artists from Belgium, Italy, Mexico, and Washington D.C. featured a variety of works in different media. In Addition, there were multi-entertainment performances by magicians, dancers, mimes and clowns.

In 2005 the Children’s Art Exhibit tripled in size. Artwork came from all parts of Michigan and Wisconsin. Deaf Artists from  the US, Mexico and Texas displayed their art work. A Deaf Russian Dance troupe performed and entertainers told ASL stories. Added to this was a wonderful Mime Performance.

In 2008 the festival was held on a beautiful day.  Our traditional Children’s Art Gallery, Artist’s Gallery, and Performances, from all over Michigan and the United States, were outstanding exhibits.  The De’VIA Art Exhibit and History was first narrated at this festival.   At the end of the day, the Village Commons was packed with children and adults watching the grand finale.
